A MILWAUKEE WOMAN SAY THAT THE SOJOURNER TRUTH SHELTER NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED.
Dear Tory Lowe
My name is Mahogany Smith. I am a single mother with two children. On April 29, 2019 around 9pm in the cold and rain, my kids and I were asked to leave the Sojourner Truth Shelter in Milwaukee with no where to go. I had entered the shelter due to a domestic violence situation. The police dropped my kids and I off there with only the clothes on our backs, and my sons video game system.
It took days to do paperwork, and for me to even meet with the head person who has retired since. When I asked for clothing I was told they didn’t have any available mind you we just had the clothes on our backs. When asked for soap we were given hotel soap and body wash and was told it was what was donated at the time. I usually stayed in my room until nights when we were told if no one cooked for ourself and kids the kitchen would be shut down and we would have to feed ourselves. If we left to feed ourselves we were told to be back by curfew at 8pm or be asked to leave the shelter.
I used my quest card which was all I had to make sure my kids ate as well as others. Some nights we went hungry or they made box macaroni and peanut butter jelly sandwiches. When I asked for cabs or busfare to get to work or important appointments so I wouldn’t have the urge to reach back out to my abuser I was told “this is a temporary shelter what would you do if you was not here?” Who wants to hear that coming out a dv situation. As many donations as this place receives I could get little to no assistance.
Weeks later they put a 18 year old girl and the room with my two children and I. This woman would come back under the influence of weed and liquor, and go around the shelter threatening and bullying others. She started calling my kids outs their names accusing us of going through her things.
When I brought it to staffs attention I was ignored and told to handle it amongst our selves. When asked for things I was scorned and belittle as if I was encountering my abuser again. When asked to speak to speak with Carmen the ceo after this behavior from staff I was than asked to leave. I believe that this place needs to be re evaluated in how they are threatening occupants of domestic abuse.
When I asked to speak to the CEO about what was going on with my family the staff put me and my family out late at night on the streets. I had no other choice but to call my abuser for help cause we had no where to go. Thank God I got into another shelter but The Sojourner truth house needs to be investigated. I have seen several things while I was there go on and these activities were very questionable.
👑: Wow. I am shocked to hear this. I will definitely look into this situation, and if any others have any complaints about this shelter.
